At 9am on July 12, 2021, students from the Jain Center of South Florida (JCSF) with some parents visited Sheyes of Miami #4, which serves both Brownsville and Liberty City in Miami. Mr. Altermont Walker, Administrator at Sheyes, and his teachers provided a high-quality education for children in this historical African American neighborhood in Miami.

Today’s specials events were a collaboration among FIU Jain Studies, the Jain Center of South Florida, and The East West Foundation with Sheyes to enhance the childrens education through hands-on environmental education and STEM kits. These were the four classes of students at Sheyes joined that volunteers from JCSF (three parents, 7 students, and 2 Jain teachers), Dr. Zafreen Jaffery from Behavioral Science Research Institute, and Albert Knoepffler from Palmer Trinity to plant 9 fruit and shade trees. There are more than 30 food and ornamental plants at the school in between rain showers. While the students were planting, they were engaged and were able to learn the skills of planting, maintaining plants, the role of the plant world for our food and climate.Read More...
